Architects - Dethroned

Experiments/ Development

This printing look was inspired by one of the albums created by Architects called Ruin which to me, looked like printing was used which interested me so I decided to try it out for myself.

I decided to create a crown stencil because the crown was used on the ‘Hollow Crown’ album which the song ‘Dethroned’ features on and also I think it would be acceptable to include the crown since this song is about success and power.

I created the stencil using cardboard, I drew the crown onto the cardboard and cut it out, covered it in paint and printed it onto paper a couple of times.

I decided to use fire because it represents anger and it’s aggressive so I created a 3D model of the fire and separated it into three parts so that I can print different sized fire with different colours.

I created the stencil in the same way as I did with the crown.

I have created some typography of my own to represent the beat and theme of the song so I can use them on my covers. I have gone with the aggressive look and tried the different versions of it. I used ink for it because I think it’s easier to use in terms of moving and spreading it on the page.

For this one, I tried to visually display the word ‘hectic’ through how it could look. I did it by making it look busy and cramped especially the background, I combined different textured parts from the different flame prints and combined them together by cropping each part and layering them on top of each other in Photoshop. I like the way it looks because you get the different coloured parts and different textures get formed. Finally, I placed one of my typography on top of it, I used black so that the ‘A’ stands out because on the ‘Hollow Crown’ album, the ‘A’ takes up most of the space so I have gone for that look.

I did two versions of this, one darker than the other to see which I prefer and I think I prefer the darker version because the lighter version, in my opinion, don’t suit the song.

I feel like I have achieved the hectic look and I think it also looks a bit angry because the way everything is scattered in random placed which looks quite loose.
