Tom Waits - Shiny Things

For this track, I wanted to focus more on the lyrics and the meaning of it as I felt like I haven’t done that yet.
I wanted to create a short video to represent the lyrics. When I listened to the song, I had the image of a short animation which I felt like would be interesting.

I think the song is about how meaningful things like love is more important than objects that can be bought especially shiny things which is mentioned in the song. I feel like the key part of the song is the lyrics ‘Though the only I want that shines is to be king, Here in your eyes, To be your only shiny thing” because it makes the song make sense, it’s probably about his wife and how he wants to be the only thing that shines in her eyes.

I have created a quick storyboard to give me an idea of how it will look like and what will happen in the short animation, I tried to create a story that relates to the song and lyrics so I’m using crows as the characters. The only idea of it is that the male crow finds shiny things and gives it to the female crow to impress her but she’s not interested in shiny things so finally, he gives her his heart/crown (to represent the king part) to impress her and she accepts it because she prefers meaningful things than materials which I feel like what the song is about.

I have created different versions of what the characters could look like, I wanted an animated looking crow but not cartoon like because the song is quite serious so I wanted a character to create that feeling.

I have sketched out each character and object needed for this animation, I also sketched out the crow’s walk which was vital that I got it right. I sketched out each thing with a pencil first then went over it with a fineliner so the lines can be seen. I tried to make the female crow slightly different to the male crow because I want the audience to know that the other character is a female so I added eyelashes to the crow and nothing else, to me, it looks like a female crow.

I finally drew each scene separately with pencil then fineliner, scanned them in and edited them on Photoshop by including the colour into it by using the fill tool and filled each part.
