Influence & Behaviour

16/11/2015 - Lecture

- Influence - The capacity to have an effect on the character, development or behaviour of someone.

- Behaviour - Which a person behaves in response to a situation or stimulus.

Key questions
-Why do people do things they do?
-Why do people feel the things they feel?

After seeing the questions, I thought about manipulation as the key word because at times, one of the reasons people do things they do or feel the things they feel because of manipulation, which is why I want to talk about the Jenny McCarthy's Blu eCigs advert because I can see how one person can get manipulated into buying one for a couple of reasons. First, it speaks to both genders but it tries to get the guy's attention by getting a good looking model to play the role, she tried to get the girl's attention by saying things like the hair or breath won't smell which girls hate and also, it speaks to single people because she mentioned something to do with being single, also, she said some key words that stood out like freedom.
The things she was saying related to millions of people like when she said about her not leaving the club to go outside to smoke, because I know at times, smokers hate going outside every time they have to smoke especially when the weather isn't great, so she was saying the right type of things that people wanted to hear, it gave the impression that she was one of them and she knows the struggle.

What I got from the video was that you can manipulate a person by relating to them like saying all of the things they want to hear by saying the solutions to their problems but it can be misleading as adverts and companies like these cares more about the money and profit than the customers, so they give the impression that they care.

My opinion on manipulation.... Obviously, manipulation isn't always bad, I think manipulating someone is essential at times when someone is trying to sell a product or get someone on your side during a campaign but as long as it isn't misleading or forcing someone then I think manipulation is harmless.
I think manipulating someone without them knowing is sometimes quite clever and creative.
