'The complete Graphic Designer - Design for communication'
It's a book, I would say, for Graphic Designers who are still unsure about what Graphic Design is and are trying to understand the basics of it like layering a page and the importance of setting it correctly.
This book is to gain a perspective of Graphic Design and its practical applications in the industry.
This book is set out in different sections and talks about advertisement, the design process and page layout but I have picked out a specific area which is Semiotics ('The study of signs and symbols and their impact on communication and language' - from the book.)
I chose this subject because we live in a world nowadays where less people are reading and more people are communicating with signs and symbols.
Semiotics - I looked at Ferdinand De Saussure who is a Swiss linguist and semiotician which is meant to be the father of Semiotics and he created the 'Saussure's sign definition' which is the image below.
Hiroshima 40th Anniversary poster
I saw this poster in the book which relates to Semiotics. What fascinates me is that the writing and the hand gesture is for different people, what I mean is that the word 'PEACE' is for people who can read English words so it's not for every person from every nationality but the hand gesture, on the other hand. is a worldwide symbol which is used in so many countries and it means the same which means stop so you can see the contrast between words and symbols.
