10/02/2016 - Seminar
In this seminar, the focus was on how and when to reference. I looked forward to this seminar because I was struggling to reference my essay as I didn't know how to.
The first thing we looked at was looking at the different kinds of information relating to referencing something like paraphrasing which is using someone's words but writing in my own words, there is also summary and direct quote which is actually using the author's exact words which I know is vital to reference that you have.
When to reference?
- Stats
- Images
- Paraphrasing
- Direct Quotes
How to reference?
- Brief details (Author's name and date) - during the essay
- Full details - at the end
- Direct quotes - Author's name, year, page number
- Websites - Author's name and year (during the essay) and Author's name/Organisation's name, initials, title, year and link (Reference list at the end)
- Online Images - Artist/Author, year, image title, medium image and URL
- Paraphrasing/Summarize - Author's name and year
What you can reference?
- Books
- Magazines/Journals
- Websites
- Online Images
I found out the difference between a reference list and a bibliography, a reference list is a list of authors and a bibliography is a list of additional sources.
I found this session useful because I feel more comfortable in referencing my essay. I know how, when and what to reference and if I do need additional help, I can use the University website on APA 6th Referencing.
