Research and Essay Writing

3/02/2016 - Seminar

In this seminar, we looked at the structure of an essay, how the essay should be set out and why.
This seminar was useful because I haven't wrote an essay in ages so it was nice to recap information on how to write an essay.

We start with what the essay is about, more importantly, what is my argument?, this is a good starting point to research, show evidence and examples. I will have a clear idea of what I'm going to write and what is the purpose of this essay. These are also good questions to ask myself from the start.

Introduction - Having a good introduction is important, it attracts the reader's attention and makes them want to carry on reading. A question in the introduction can be used to get the the viewer involved and get them have an opinion before they continue reading the essay.

The point of an introduction is to introduce the topic and a good way to raise the question/argument of the essay. It's vital that the introduction is clear and easy to understand, if not, the viewer will not continue to read as they won't understand it.

Main body paragraphs - The main purpose of these paragraphs is to develop the question/argument further. It's a way to connect the introduction with the conclusion. The main paragraphs should look at both sides of the argument to make the essay fair for anybody who is reading it. It should look at key points that supports the argument.

Conclusion - Conclusions can be used to restate the purpose of the essay, remind the reader what the argument/question was and use the conclusion to answer the question or give an opinion. Talk about some parts of the essay that was key to finding the answer or opinion that I have.

There are a couple of ways that an essay can conclude, it can be done by summarising the essay, ask the reader some questions to think about or finish it with a cliffhanger.
