Master the Grid

'Master the Grid'

Today, the workshop was about how to use the grid and for me, it was the first time I worked with the grid system, normally I just place things anywhere I feel like without using the grid.

The first activity was getting a newspaper and creating lines like margins according to how it was set out and what I have never realized before was how everything on a newspaper had a purpose and was set out in a certain way which was the use of the grid. After this activity, everything made sense, I knew that the grid was important and made the page look neat.

The second activity was to use the grid myself by creating a poster on InDesign for example.

These are the posters I have created using the grid method.
The first one, I made it simple by just including a picture and text, I did this by just following the lines.
The other two are one part like two book pages and I used the grid to make each side equal like the space between the poster and the end. For the text, I used the box to line it up.

My opinion - I think I will use the grid in the near future when I'm layering a page out. Following the grid is a better method than what I was using in the past because it looks neat, professional and it's well structured. It also helps me decide where to place certain things and helps me to make areas even and equally so it doesn't look odd.
