FILM: Urbanised

22/10/2015 - Seminar

- How can design make a positive change to a place?

From watching the film, I am convinced that a design can change a place positively, for example, in Bogota, Colombia, there's a lot of cars which makes the roads compacted so the parking and space are restricted, what they designed is a 'Transmelio' which raises the bus status. The idea is that they separate a lane on the road for the bus so no cars can drive on it which leaves an open road for the buses which I think is quicker to travel with the bus as there won't be any traffic.
Not only they designed the 'Transmelio', they designed a road for bicycles, no cars allowed which increased the amount of people on bicycles, I think that is a helpful design because not only it decreases the amount of pollution caused by the vehicles but it decreases the amount of crashes each year.

- How can a place be viewed differently depending on your point of view?

There was a person in the film who was talking about this and he was saying that on the plane, Paris looks amazing but from a person's view, someone who lives there, he said it's a distaster because there's a lot of space between the tourist attractions and buildings which leads to the people travelling a long way but then again, if the buildings were close, the people would be stuck in traffic because the area would be populated.

- What could we take from this film?

What I can take from it is that design has a big influence on how we live and how we are going to live but both positive and also negative in how people response to it.

It's positive because it can help people, for example, in Copenhagen, Denmark, there are bicycle lanes by the pavement instead of people riding bicycles alongside cars so it doesn't take up space and it's safer.

It's negative because sometimes a design does no think about everybody and only certain people like in Mumbai, because buildings are created for the wealthy people which puts pressure on the poor people as there is an increase in population but no plan for the poor and no space for growth.
