Physical Studio 3

26/11/2015 - Process and Production

In this 'Physical Studio' session, I had to draw objects that were in front of me placed in a certain way, there were four tables which meant four different placed objects.

The idea behind this session was to improve my drawing and observation skills and be able to draw something that is in front of me. I usually draw the objects without thinking about it and get the proportion wrong but in this session, I tried to use my pencil to determine how big or far away an object is which I don't usually do so at first, I didn't know what I was doing with the pencil but with abit of practice, I kind of got the hang of it slightly. I sometimes used darker lines for object closer to me and lighter lines for objects further away than me.
Also, I only had a certain amount of time to draw something which meant I had to choose what I wanted to draw and with which medium that would go well with the object so I took that into consideration when drawing an object instead of diving into drawing the object.

I think I experimented alot in this session like I have used several different mediums, I drew some small and large things, I drew detailed and not so detailed things so I think I
have a range of different experiments that I have created.
I have used pastels, pencil, markers and fineliners, I mostly used the pencil, fineliners and markers to add tone to it if there was a shadow on the object and used pastel if something was quite colourful or had different colours to it.

I would say my work throughout this was loose and abit out of control because I combined objects together, one on top of the other on the paper and it didn't follow a pattern like some parts had only small drawings and others had large, sometimes I combined small drawings with large drawings aswell so my work is abit unpredictable.

For each, I tried to vary of what I draw like for one part, I focused on drawing the typography that were on the objects and created different version of it like the third and fourth image, that's where I focused on the typography but for other parts, I focused on the shade of it like the object in the first image and the big 'R' in the second to last image and I found the pastel was good to mix colours together especially when I had to create the shade of it, I could combine colours that were the same but different tone together.

I thought this was a good exercise because each object were different which meant different kind of drawing and medium were used and trying to find what works and what doesn't which can only be found out by actually experimenting with different objects and mediums.
